Green Business Club Eindhoven: Smart on the way
Published on November 5, 2025'With mobility we can really make a difference'
Working together towards a sustainable and future-proof city. That's the goal of the Green Business Club Eindhoven. Focusing on mobility is part of that. "Employers can really make a difference with mobility," says program manager Marlon van Schellebeek. On Thursday, October 30th, the club dedicated the "Smart on the Road" meeting to this topic. Brainport Bereikbaar participated.
"GBCE wants to accelerate Eindhoven's sustainability efforts," Marlon explains. "Mobility is an integral part of that. It affects everything: how employees get to work, how customers and suppliers reach the city, and how livable Eindhoven remains."
From inspiration to projects
The GBCE was founded in 2017 at the initiative of Heijmans, NS, ProRail, Ernst & Young, and Rabobank. It now has around 20 members, ranging from large to small, from municipalities to green space providers. "Our strength lies in collaboration and knowledge sharing. It's both enjoyable and useful that we look at energy, green spaces, mobility, and circularity from different perspectives. We organize knowledge sessions several times a year. These sessions inspire us to develop concrete projects. For example, the nature playground we installed in the city center."
Working on mobility can be difficult
At the end of October, a session on mobility was held. "Employers often want to work on sustainable mobility, but it can also be challenging. A car-free city center or zero-emission zones, for example, often feel like a limitation at first. It's therefore important to know what's coming and what leeway exists within the new framework. By engaging in discussions with the municipality, Brainport Bereikbaar, and NS (Dutch Railways) during the meeting, we demonstrated that there are also opportunities."
Policy and practice
Mobility broker Wouter de Valk of Brainport Bereikbaar discussed various mobility solutions for employers. "He showed how practical tools like the mobility scan or shared transport can help you take immediate action. Even small adjustments in areas like parking or travel expense policies can have a major impact. Furthermore, the municipality of Eindhoven provided insight into its plans for the city, and the Dutch Railways (NS) explained how to make sustainable mobility attractive. This gave attendees valuable insights into how they can work towards accessible and sustainable mobility."
On the way to results
The members' facility and HR managers were particularly invited to the meeting. "It's important," says Marlon. "Mobility is so much more than just a green or logistics issue. How employees travel affects their job satisfaction, health, and productivity. You really need to look at it strategically from an HR and facility perspective. Fortunately, there are many levers you can pull as an employer. This meeting helped us find them. And we certainly hope that this will lead to further collaboration among our members and concrete results!"
